For the presentation, make a powerpoint with at least five slides, with
at least one image per slide (not more than two per slide). Give a
brief bio of your artist, then talk about why you chose to study that
person and her work. What was visually interesting to you? Does her
bio indicate any issues in her career that were related to gender? The
goal is to organize your thoughts about the artist and teach the class
about her.
It should be at least 5 minutes and not more than 10.
Email with any further questions.
Those of you who were there last week know your date assignment, either this week or next. If you were not in class last week, email me to find out your date!

Assignment for Class April 4th
We will be touring the Tanner show with curator Anna Marley on April 4th. There are two aspects of your assignment to prepare for class.
1. Walk through the show, you don't have to spend a lot of time, but do take in the different sections and aspects of the show. Take special notice of the images of women and formulate at least one question to ask Anna about the show. Bring these questions to class in written form to turn in to me.
2. Read the chapter in the exhibition catalogue, Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit, by Michael Leja, "Reproduction Troubles: Tanner's "Mothers of the Bible" for the Ladies Home Journal," pg. 147-156. Be ready to discuss the issues in the article with the class while we are meeting with Anna.
She is being very generous with her time for us. Please give her the respect she deserves by being prepared.

Women of Abstract Expressionism
The First Annual Distinguished Art
History Alumni and Scholars Lecture
Dr. Joan Marter, Distinguished Professor of
Art History, Rutgers
University
"Women of Abstract Expressionism:
Artists and Their Critics"
Thursday,
March 15, 2012 | 4 p.m.
Tyler School of Art | Room B004
Dr. Joan Marter, a distinguished Temple alumna, is an
internationally respected and widely-published art historian and curator.
She is editor of Woman’s Art Journal and served as Editor-in-Chief of
the Grove Encyclopedia of American Art. In 2011, Marter received a
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Caucus for Art at the College Art
Association meetings. Guest curator for 16 exhibitions, her show Women
and Abstract Expressionism was honored by the International Association of Art
Critics (AICA).
This paper problematizes the
received canon of Abstract Expressionism by presenting the critical reception
of women artists from the 1950s to the present. As the organizer of the
only exhibition devoted to these artists—Women and Abstract Expressionism—she
will also consider some of the ethical problems in working as a guest curator.
Joan was among the first to receive
a B.A. in Art History from Temple
in University graduating magna cum laude in 1968.
